Agri-environment Innovation to recover the landscape and its features

“Neorural” means a rural area where environmental services are added to the present agricultural activities . Through the re-naturalization of the area,  improvements in landscape quality, increased biodiversity, conservation of renewable resources and bettering the quality of life are achieved.

FROM RICE COMES NATURE.

La Cassinazza is a rural land area of 1,400 hectares, consists of 7 Cascina’s. About twenty years ago, it presented itself as group of rice fields without any ecologically useful environmental features. In time,  trees were planted, hedges and channels were created, encouraging the repopulation of fauna of the area. In this way, we have created biodiversity and spectacular environment around the rice fields. This experience has allowed us to verify that, if managed in an integrated manner, agricultural and environmental production can easily live together and help each other.

In this framework, we produce our own Riso Naturale®, a quality rice, due to the fact that we do not use chemical fertilizers or insecticides, and called it natural rice because it is produced with the help of nature, which reinforces the organoleptic characteristics and turns it into a quality food.

Our Rice Naturale®, Carnaroli variety, is also called “the king of rice” and it is the ideal for cooking fine Italian risotto. The secret is in the starch of grain, particularly rich in amylose (24%). This makes the rice consistent (loses little starch in the cooking water) with a great capacity to absorb the flavours and seasonings that enhances the tastes.

PRODUCTION OF THE LANDSCAPE AND ENVIRONMENT.

The production of landscape is an agricultural production to all the effects, such as it is:

  • reversible;
  • basically requires the same machines and technical capacity as agricultural;
  • it allows, to obtain significant environmental results in terms of biodiversity and landscape even if applied onto only 10-15% of the agricultural area used;
  • it allows one to develop the concept of ruralization, namely to transform the agricultural environment from a mere producer of material goods, to a provider of 3rd generation agriculture services.
    The agricultural land becomes a new economic and social engine, combining respect for the environment and retaining an important rural heritage. The experience of the development of environmental aspects in agricultural production has led to the application of various innovative agronomic techniques, including the creation of ” rice field margins”, which are areas important for biodiversity as well as pollinating insects. The adoption of technical conservation agriculture (CA) and the recovery of rice straw has reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

REDUCTION OF GREENHOUSE GAS.

The need to create a model of sustainable agriculture particularly in economic terms, has led to the development of conservation agriculture (reduced applications for preparing land) and crop rotation, trying to stimulate the development of microbial communities in the soil to improve the fertility characteristics of the soil itself. The development of these aspects has resulted in the creation of a more sustainable agriculture in which, the use of herbicides, pesticides and CO2 emissions have been reduced.

RECOVERY AND REUSE OF NUTRIENTS (RRN).

The need to further improve the characteristics of organic fertilizers, has encouraged Neorurale to realize a new plant/Center for the recovery and reuse of the nutrients derivable from organic matter. A solution that is an example of circular economy, reducing raw materials and managing waste efficiently and sustainably.

Nowadays the nutrient cycle of has been interrupted due to agricultural imports of nutrients needed to replace those removed by the crop annually. This practice, as well as making agricultural production dependent on imported fertilizers, has a heavy economic cost, and produces significant environmental damage, as these elements will be added to those discharged downstream from human activities which use agricultural products.

Giving back the circularity to this cycle, i.e. to restore the fertility of agricultural land through the recovery of the nutrients removed by crops, gives autonomy to agricultural areas, in terms of nutrients. Consequently reducing the pollution by nitrates and phosphates, and contributing to the economy, to strengthen a strategic sector such as agriculture, whilst also  ensuring a more organic and balanced fertilization.
